It all began with “Where is Everybody?” It was an early example of the man in an empty town formula. Its stories helped launched other popular trends as well. There was The Dummy, Living Doll, and The After Hours. They all made viewers wonder if these inanimate objects were watching them. Monsters of all kinds played a role in the series, but they were always there for a reason. Aliens help show how humans fear everything new or different.

Other episodes used ghostly phone calls to create tension. These include Night Calls and Long Distance Call. A few rare episodes included almost no dialogue at all. The Invaders showed one woman fending off creatures from her home, and Two saw a man and woman attempting to survive together after the apocalypse.

Many episodes told of the horrors of war. The Purple Testament followed a man who could see a light from soldiers who were about to die. Deaths-Head Revisited was about a former Nazi officer.
Not all episodes of The Twilight Zone had such a grim tone, though. One for the Angels is a tale of redemption. Romance, comedy, and friendship are scattered throughout its moral fables.
These tales continue to inspire writers today. The creatures of The Monsters are Due on Maple Street inspired Steven King’s The Mist. Perchance to Dream resembles the premise of The Nightmare on Elm Street. The title of the episode What’s in the Box will be familiar to anyone who’s a fan of the crime thriller Se7en.
