Paul was found to have died from a gunshot wound to the head. His butler subsequently called up the head of MGM studios, Louis B. Mayer. Paul's butler knew to call Louis instead of the police so that the studio head could perform damage control on the scene before the authorities arrived. Louis needed to make sure that nothing that was found painted either MGM or Jean Harlow in a negative light.
Louis B. Mayer was at the scene of Paul’s death two hours before the authorities, and he was the one that presented them with Paul’s alleged suicide note. The note was a vague apology to Jean, though Jean claimed that the note didn’t mean anything to her. The authorities took the scene at face value and took Louis at his word, declaring the death of Paul Bern a suicide and moving on.
Despite the fact that Paul Bern’s death remains officially considered suicide, there are many that believe foul play was involved. While few suspect that Jean Harlow had anything to do with it, many point to a third party by the name of Dorothy Millette.
