When music legend Elvis Presley was at the peak of his career success, he found out that he was going to be drafted into the army to serve during World War II. While many other stars at the time did everything they could to try and get out of their responsibility to defend their country, Elvis gladly accepted it. Elvis had eagerly handed in his draft card at the age of 18 and had always been a proud patriot.

Elvis’ manager wasn’t too keen on his most profitable client being sent overseas and later claimed that the singer being drafted into the United States Army ended up costing the two of them nearly half of a million dollars. When adjusted for inflation, that sum becomes exponentially larger. Still, Elvis’ time in service ended up having a positive effect on his career and turned him from a deviant figure into a positive role model in the eyes of much of the conservative public.
Elvis ended up serving in the United States Army from early 1958 until mid-1960, during which time he was stationed in Germany. Elvis saw a bit of active duty, though his time in the army wasn’t filled with as much action as some of his fans like to claim. Still, it can’t be argued that Elvis’ willingness to serve overseas was something to be admired, and there’s a reason that people still bring up the fact that he actually served in the army.
