Tracy Nelson was born into a family so full of entertainers and celebrities that she almost seemed destined for the stage. She first appeared on film at the age of 5. She later studied dance and theater and went on to appear in several other projects. Her first major role was Jennifer DeNucio in the short-lived series Square Pegs.
Her parents Ricky Nelson and Kristi Harmon had a tumultuous relationship that ended up landing the family in court. Her father died suddenly when a cabin heater malfunction caused his private plane to burst into flames and crash. Her mother attempted to sue for his life insurance money and control of his estate when she received nothing in his will. That was dropped quickly, but the custody battle where Kristi’s brother Mark attempted to sue for custody of her son Sam was more difficult and drawn-out. The family’s in a more stable place today, but Tracy had to lose both her mother and father and endure years of discontent to get it there.
Cancer has also been a recurring issue throughout her life. A bout with Hodgkin’s disease led to a serious case of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, an issue she discovered after a prophetic dream where her father begged her to see a doctor. The treatments were brutal, and she later had to deal with thyroid and breast cancer that required major reconstructions of her body.
Tracy Nelson is an inspirational figure who overcame personal tragedy to continue pursuing her passion for acting. She’s an active spokesperson for research and treatment of all types of cancer and has received rewards for her efforts.
