Dorothy Dandridge was born into a show business family – raised by her mother Ruby who was a famous actress. Her mother pushed Dorothy Dandridge and her sister Vivian to pursue a dancing career. The two sisters toured the country until the Great Depression hit.

When Dorothy grew up, she decided to return to her singing and dancing career. She performed at popular nightclubs and soon began appearing in films and radio programs. Many of her early roles were in “race films” which depicted black Americans with horrific stereotypes.

But Dorothy Dandridge was eager to be something bigger than a stereotype. Her mother had to endure these stereotypes during her acting career. Dorothy wanted to ensure that she didn’t suffer the same fate. She was determined to become a leading lady.

Such dreams were unusual for the time. But Dorothy Dandridge was eager to break barriers. She appeared in major films as a leading lady but always had to fight stereotypes as well as exploitative producers.

She continued to perform in nightclubs in addition to her film career. While she was a hit at every nightclub and luxury hotel, she continued to face discrimination because of her race. She would often lament that she couldn’t stay in a hotel room even after performing for other guests.

She also had many other troubles in her personal life. She had failed marriages, an ill daughter, and financial managers who cheated her. Her life was full of tragedy and we must remember her not only for her great films but also for the barriers that she broke!

Let’s learn about Dorothy Dandridge’s life and career and how her life was destroyed by Hollywood.
