Lola Albright started life in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of two popular local gospel singers. After graduating high school in 1942, she continued to study piano and worked as a receptionist for radio stations and a model. Albright was spotted by a talent agent while modeling in California and landed her first movie roles—mostly uncredited—for MGM, alongside the likes of Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. Albright didn’t really catch the public's attention until she played Palmer, the seductive wife of a fairly nasty boxing manager, in the 1949 film noir Champion.
At the same time, she was a favorite model of pin-up artist Gil Elvegren. Then the role of her career came along—Lola Albright was cast as Edie Hart in Peter Gunn. She played a sultry jazz singer who was also the love interest of the title character and hard-boiled detective Peter Gunn, played by actor Craig Stevens. Not only did Albright win an Emmy nomination for her performance, but she also released an album of the songs she performed with celebrated composer Henry Mancini—one of the only television albums he ever scored. During her lifetime, Lola Albright married a total of three times: once to a radio presenter from her hometown, once to an actor she worked with, and finally, to the pianist on Peter Gunn. But all three marriages ended in divorce, and she never married again. Albright continued to act on television right up to the 1980s, finally retiring at 60 and taking up residence in sunny Toluca Lake, California.
