Tom’s early life was nothing sensational. He was just a boy from Florida who fell in love with music as a way to escape a difficult childhood. It wasn’t until he formed The Heartbreakers that the world took notice of his talent.

They released several hit singles with album sales of over 1 million. Their success meant plenty of contract squabbles. Record labels wanted to hold all their royalties and gouge customers with high prices, but the band managed to overcome these issues.

Tom claimed he wasn’t a man who could make friends easily, but he became close with almost everyone he collaborated with. Bob Dylan and Stevie Nicks saw him as a wonderful talent and a genuine person and were shocked at the news of his death.

Tom was already in agonizing pain before The Heartbreakers began their 40th-anniversary tour. He’d suffered a hip injury during rehearsals. He was too proud and dedicated of a performer to cancel any shows and powered through over 53 performances.

By the time he went home at the end of the tour, he was found passed out and in cardiac arrest and declared dead at the hospital. His death was ruled an accidental overdose with fentanyl as the primary culprit.

No one will ever know whether or not hip surgery could have prevented his overdose. He already had a history of substance abuse and mental health issues, but it would have at least relieved his pain.

Tom’s music continues to influence the world to this day. His band also continues to play, knowing that he’d want them to continue his legacy of doing everything in his power to please his fans.
