Did you know that Gilligan’s Island was taken off the air to make room for Gunsmoke at the insistence of a CBS executive’s wife and that a fourth season of the beloved comedic sitcom had originally been planned? Gilligan’s Island was one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1960s, and because of this it came as a surprise to both fans and the creative staff of the show when the CBS network canceled it after only three seasons and 98 episodes.

The final episode of Gilligan’s Island was an episode by the name of “Gilligan the Goddess”. Sadly, the creative team didn’t realize that the episode was going to be the show’s last, so it didn’t prove a very ceremonious send-off for the show’s castaways. Everyone involved in Gilligan’s Island had expected that they were coming back for a fourth season, but this didn’t end up being the case. A fourth season was planned, with the Western series Gunsmoke being canceled after 12 seasons and Gilligan’s Island being given that series’ timeslot for a planned fourth season. However, things didn’t quite work out this way.
Apparently, the head of the CBS network’s wife was away on vacation when Gunsmoke was canceled. When she returned, she was livid because Gunsmoke was one of her favorite shows. The executive then brought Gunsmoke back and canceled Gilligan’s Island instead. Although Gilligan’s Island would later be revived in the form of various made-for-television features and animated series, fans have always wondered what could’ve been if things had turned out better during the show’s original run.
