When talking about timeless television shows from the past, Eight Is Enough, a drama-comedy on ABC, must inevitably come up. The series debuted in 1977 and ended in 1981. Eight is Enough was adapted on a book written by newspaper columnist Thomas Braden about his own family in 1975. It turns out that the only things the play and the book had in common were the family names and the father's job.

The idea behind Eight Is Enough was straightforward, but the production was plagued by issues from the start. The show's ratings have fluctuated since its debut. When it first aired in the middle of the 1977 season, it drew a viewership share of 21.1 percent, making it the 23rd most popular program that year. In 1977–78, it had a 22.2 rating, putting it in 12th position, ahead of both The Love Boat and Soap. Audience numbers increased in season 3, then dropped back down to season 2 levels in season 4. As season five came to a close, fans lost interest, and Eight is Enough's ratings plunged to the bottom 30. This season-ending episode of the show offered no closure.

That the show Eight Is Enough had been axed was news to Van Patten because of a story in the New York Times. However, the show's leading man only learned that he would be departing his role when he read about it in the newspaper. David and his high school classmates are torn between the past and the present as they prepare for their ten-year reunion in the most recent episode. Jeremy's biological father has arrived in town to claim his parenting rights, which has put him in the difficult position of deciding where he will live.
