While she stepped out of the limelight a decade ago, she’s still remembered for her great career that spanned close to 5 decades. Her journey, however, wasn’t an easy one and her life serves as a great inspiration to anyone looking to pursue their dreams.
Teri Garr came into the world on December 11, 1944, in Ohio. She spent her childhood in Ohio and New Jersey before settling in California which is where she grew up. She lost her father at a young age and had to learn the responsibilities of life much faster than most youths.
She took acting, singing, and dancing lessons as a child. When she became an adult, she furthered her education at The Actors Studio and at the Lee Strasberg Film and Television Institute.
By the 1960s, she began appearing as an extra and as a background dancer in several popular feature films. In the late 1960s, she began to shift her focus mostly on acting and appeared in bit parts in popular TV shows.
By the early 1970s, Teri Garr was able to show off her comic talents through the various characters she played on The Sonny and Cher Show. This led to more opportunities to act in film and television.
She won praise for her role in Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Conversation and Mel Brooks’ film Young Frankenstein. She then continued to star in major blockbuster films such as Close Encounters of The Third Kind.
Her most famous role was in Tootsie – for which she garnered an Oscar nomination. She also had a memorable role in the dark comedy film After Hours. Following her role in Tootsie, she became one of the hardest working actresses in the industry.
Sadly, this wasn’t to last forever…
