The American war comedy-drama TV series M*A*S*H (an initial for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) broadcast on CBS for 11 good years. After the success of the 1970 film adaptation of M*A*S*H, which was centered on Richard Hooker's 1968 novel MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, Larry Gelbart created the first original spin-off series based on the franchise. The original cast included McLean Stevenson as company commander Henry Blake, Gary Burghoff as company clerk Walter "Radar" O'Reilly as head nurse Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan as chaplain Father John Mulcahy as orderly Maxwell Klinger and William Christopher as chaplain Father John Mulcahy. Alan Alda and Wayne Rogers played the protagonist surgeons Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce and "Trapper" John McIntyre, respectively.

While Corporal "Radar" O'Reilly played an important role in the show, here's why he was written off the show before the end of season seven . Burghoff chose to leave the show after he took an extended hiatus. After initially blaming weariness for his absence from many episodes in Season 6, it has been claimed that the real reason was that he was universally loathed by his co-stars and was notoriously tough to deal with. After he left "M*A*S*H" for good a season earlier, the director allegedly tried to get him to reprise his role in the two-part episode "Goodbye Radar." Dubin said that Burghoff couldn't continue with the performance when pressed for the real reason he left. When asked about Burghoff's emotional state on set of "Goodbye Radar," he claimed he had to take a 15-minute break to walk Burghoff around the Fox backlot.

When questioned in the interview if Burghoff was unhappy because it was his last episode of the long-running CBS comedy, Rubin answered that that wasn't the whole story. After eight seasons on M*A*S*H, Burghoff decided to leave the show because he was sick of the hectic schedule and wanted to spend more time with his family. In the program, Radar left because his uncle had recently passed away and he needed to return to the family farm to help out financially.
