Mary Tyler Moore got her start on the Dick Van Dyke Show, a sitcom that turned her from a relative unknown to a household name practically overnight. She played Laura Petrie, wife of the protagonist, Rob, played by Dick Van Dyke. But Laura wasn’t the usual female lead. Rather than stick with the tried and true characterization of TV wives as being obedient and playing second fiddle to their husbands, the writers of The Dick Van Dyke Show decided to create a character with opinions, verve, and agency. And Mary was the perfect person to portray her. In fact, the character was such a hit with audiences, that the writers had to come up with more and more storylines for Laura. This, of course, made Mary Tyler Moore a bigger and bigger star. But it also made her an extremely important figure in the women’s rights movement.
Her simple wardrobe choice of wearing pants instead of dresses might not seem like a big deal today. But for the time, it was unheard of. It set a new standard of what female characters were allowed to be and do on TV. And Mary’s appeal made it so that even as she changed society, they loved her for it. When the show ended, she moved on, reluctantly, to create The Mary Tyler Moore show. That show was groundbreaking in its own way and cemented Mary as one of the icons of Hollywood.
