Baywatch made its debut on NBC in 1989 but was canceled after airing just one season. Even though NBC ditched the series, it managed to survive cancellation through syndication, going on to be one of the most-watched TV series in the world with an estimated weekly viewership of more than a billion viewers.
Baywatch ultimately ran for 9 seasons before coming to an end in 1999. It was then retooled as Baywatch: Hawaii and proceeded to run for another two seasons. Throughout that time, it earned a reputation for being a pop culture phenomenon.
What viewers tuned in to see week after week for more than a decade were all of the red swimsuits, slow-motion sequences of David Hasselhoff running on the beach, and of course, the babes!
