Before dying in a plane crash himself, Paul had watched many others succumb to their passion for aviation. During Paul’s youth, he had been among the audience that watched as celebrity pilot Lincoln Beachey fell from a new monoplane during its first public flight. Years later, Paul watched as his own flight instructor fell to his death. The latter incident caused Paul to become disinterested in aviation for many years, though he eventually fell back into his old passion.
Paul ended up becoming a successful pilot in his adult years, as well as a successful businessman. He eventually found himself in charge of a whole flight school and started developing a growing fleet of charter planes that provided flights to wealthy paying citizens. Eventually, Paul set his sights on becoming a stunt pilot in Hollywood movies.
After making his was into Hollywood, Paul became one of the biggest names in stunt flying. By 1965’s The Flight of the Phoenix, Paul had been flying stunt planes in Hollywood for over two decades. Join Facts Verse as we explore the on-set death during The Flight of the Phoenix.
