However, this wasn’t always the case. Before becoming a star in cinemas, Burt was a minor celebrity that was better known for his television roles and talk show appearances. Before being cast in Deliverance, Burt had been an actor on television for well over a decade. Some of the many shows that the actor had gained notoriety on included the hit Western Gunsmoke, on which Burt portrayed a regular character from 1962 until 1965. Burt began appearing on late-night talk shows that same decade, and was soon making a name for himself via his suave personality.
It was a talk show appearance alongside the Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan that led to Burt being offered his photoshoot. The Cosmopolitan editor told Burt that no magazine had ever featured a naked man, and she believed that Burt had the perfect male figure to kick off the trend. Burt was a little tipsy at the time and thought the idea was funny.
The Cosmopolitan issue depicting Burt’s naked form was a massive success, and Deliverance was released to massive ticket sales a few months later. However, Burt was snubbed at that season’s Academy Awards. Burt came to blame his Cosmopolitan photoshoot for him not being taken seriously as a dramatic actor.
