These 1970s TV shows happened to be the most watched TV series of the decade. The 1970s were a fun but also a turbulent decade in American history. The decade produced some of America’s best films, music, and TV series. It was also the decade when the US Dollar went off the gold standard, the Watergate scandal, and economic crisis.

Many of the popular 1970s TV shows offered audiences a glimpse into the issues of the day. Others offered audiences a respite from the uncertainty that the decade brought.

Marcus Welby MD showed a compassionate doctor tackling many of the medical issues facing the country – which previous medical dramas were too afraid to portray. All in The Family wasn’t afraid to be politically incorrect with its language and humor. It also wasn’t afraid of using humor to tackle a wide range of challenging subjects from race relations to feminism to gun control.

Both Happy Days and its spin-off Laverne & Shirley gave audiences a chance to look back on the 1950s and 1960s which now seemed like a different era that offered more optimism and an idyllic view of American life. These shows served as a great counter to the dark themes of Marcus Welby MD and All in the Family.

Nevertheless, Americans wanted to be informed about the news. 60 Minutes became of the most watched 1970s TV shows at the end of the decade. It was perhaps the start of a news program being viewed in the same manner as a drama or sitcom would be.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to learn about the most watched TV series of the 1970s…
