The 1950s was a decade that produced some of the most groundbreaking and influential television shows in televisions history. Really, TV wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for some of the programs that premiered during this incredible decade. It was considered to be the golden age of TV as watching television became a new form of entertainment that previous generations weren't able to experience. Television, a lot like the Old Wild West, was a new frontier, and everything about the medium seemed fresh and novel.
As broadcasts transitioned from radio to TV, many viewers were tuning in to television for the first time. By the end of the decade, almost every American household had their very own TV sets in their living rooms. Can you imagine what that must have felt like? We take TV for granted these days, and with the advent of the smartphone, we all have access to a wealth of programming at our fingertips. But back then, television was boldly new and titillating.
Comedies, especially sitcoms, were some of the most-watched programs during the 1950s. Shows such as The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, and Father Knows Best excelled in the ratings department and later in the decade Westerns became one of the most-watched and popular genres of shows on the airwaves as viewers tuned in to watch series such as The Lone Ranger, Rawhide, and Bonanza.
