MASH is considered one of the best shows to ever be on the air. It perfectly blended comedy and drama in a way that resonated to viewers for years. And it still stands the test of time as one of the best shows to ever be on TV. So you'd think that such a powerful and popular show would have at least a few successful spin-offs. After all, when you think of the shows that have yielded several great spin-offs, most of those originals were less popular than MASH. And yet, when, after the 11th and final season of MASH aired, and a spin-off was created, it ended up being a failure. Not at first however.

When AfterMASH began, it picked up where MASH had left off, ratings-wise. And while it didn’t bring back a lot of the primary cast members, it had three big names (Harry Morgan as Sherman Potter, Jamie Farr as Maxwell Klinger, and William Christopher as Father Mulcahy) from the original. And at first, it was a hit. It ended its first season as the second highest rated new how of the year. Yet the network got hubristic and tried to push the limits of the show. They not only swapped out cast members to get it to feel more like the original show, but they also decided to pit it against the biggest show at the time, The A-Team. This resulted in disaster.
AfterMASH never recovered after plummeting in the ratings and was canceled by CBS before the second season even finished. In this video, we’re taking a closer look at what happened to AfterMASH, as well as the other complete failure of a spin-off, called WALTER.
