Born Bettejane Greer on September 9, 1924, in Washington DC, Jane Greer was a film and television actress who was perhaps best known for playing the femme fatale, Kathie Moffat, in 1947 noir film Out of the Past. Her other notable film credit was in the 1949 film The Big Steal. While it seemed as if Greer's career was on an unstoppable trajectory upwards, she essentially faded away into relative obscurity.
Her role as Kathie Moffatt is Jacques Tourneur's hit film was one of the most convincingly and dangerously seductive bad girls in film noir history. So, why did she all but vanish from the spotlight not long after Out of the Past hit theaters some 75 years ago?

Greer was a beauty-contest winner and model in her teen years. She began her career in the entertainment industry as a big-band singer before getting noticed by Howard Hughes who subsequently offered her an incredibly restrictive personal contract. Even though it helped her achieve stardom, it also dictated far too many aspects of her life – and when she chose to disregard it, Hughes gave her nothing but hell.
