The show was groundbreaking in that it was the first to tell stories from the point of view of a child. But beyond that, it’s generally not regarded as a show that really pushed the boundaries of TV. It was good, wholehearted fun, and showed a slice of American life in a fictionalized and idealized way. That’s why it might be a surprise to find out that it actually was the first television show to air a very controversial (at the time) thing: the bathroom.

And in particular, the toilet. In this video, we go over the episode “Captain Jack” where the script called for a scene involving the toilet. Up until then, shows had never shown a toilet on the air, nor had they even shot anything inside a bathroom. The general rule was not even acknowledging that toilets and bathrooms existed, despite the fact that by then they were pretty much in every American home. We go over the background of how this dilemma came to be, and how a compromise was reached that allowed the toilet to be shown, but in a way that satisfied the “Standards and Practices” department at CBS.

We also talk about some other shows that broke ground when it comes to toilets and bathrooms in the decades since. It certainly wasn’t a common occurrence, so when it did happen on shows like All In The Family, Ally McBeal, and Married With Children, it was certainly memorable. So check out this video today, as Facts Verse presents: The Leave it to Beaver Bathroom Scene Caused a Big Stir.
