The Jubalaires were the first rap group ever recorded despite the fact that they’re actually classified as gospel singers. They sang Christian songs and spread the gospel through their music. But what set them apart from other gospel groups was their fast-paced style of singing – akin to much of today’s rap.
As a result, 70-80 years after they initially recorded their music, they’ve seen a resurgence with the internet generation. Their music has been floating around the internet for at least a decade and in the past few years, new fans have noticed the distinct style of singing that could easily be compared to modern rap music.
But who exactly were The Jubalaires and how did they become so famous? They followed in the footsteps of many popular gospel singers of their time. They came from Florida and had the usual singing style associated with gospel and Southern music.
What set them apart was the fast-paced singing that became a recurring theme in many of their songs. Whether they were singing about Noah building their ark or Brother Bill and his hunting excursions, their songs still hold up today – not only because they’re melodious but also because they’ve got flow!
