The 1970s and 1980s have produced some of the best sitcoms in American television history! What made the sitcoms of this era so special is that they managed to often blend humor with serious drama. The characters became part of our families and remain iconic today. The Jeffersons Cast members had many interesting stories to tell that were behind the camera. Some of these provided hurdles while others also helped contribute to the greatness of the show. For example, Sherman Hemsley who played George Jefferson worked as a mailman before breaking into acting. These struggles no doubt played a role in shaping the character of George Jefferson.
Franklin Cover played Tom Willis who was also well-to-do just as The Jeffersons were. But his own life was rather humble and he traveled to work on a bus! Roxie Roker, who played his wife would often give him rides to his rental home as he didn’t have an established property at the time.
Isabel Sanford struggled to become a successful actress but her hard work really paid off when she was cast as Louise Jefferson. She became the first black woman to win a Lead Actress Award at the Emmys.
The Jeffersons also weren’t afraid to tackle subjects that could have made audiences uncomfortable. It wasn’t afraid to push the buttons that needed to be pushed. It was one of the early shows to depict a transgender character as well as explore themes of race relations, interracial marriage, religious extremism, etc. It truly was a fascinating show and The Jeffersons Cast made it one that we still want to continue to watch almost 50 years later.
