Annette Funicello was an actress that got her start in the entertainment industry at a young age, appearing on The Mickey Mouse Club when she was only 13 years old. Annette had caught Walt’s attention previously and was asked to audition for the upcoming program after performing in a rendition of Swan Lake that had been put on by the mogul at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank, California.

After successfully auditioning to appear on The Mickey Mouse Club, Annette became the series' star performer. Her natural singing and dancing skills translated well to the child audience, who enjoyed seeing someone their own age expressing themselves so freely on the television. Unlike many other child stars in the decades since Annette has never come forward with any negative feelings about the time she spent on The Mickey Mouse Club.
After her time on The Mickey Mouse Club came to an end, Annette continued working with Disney for a time. She appeared in several feature films for the company, with the most memorable arguably being 1959’s The Shaggy Dog. However, Annette was given a chance to reach a new demographic with 1963’s Beach Party, which became her first big hit away from the Disney brand. Annette would go on to star in the successful film’s several sequels.
Annette had starred in Beach Party, and it's sequels alongside Frankie Avalon, and the two reunited later on in life for a tour. During the early 1990s tour, they performed several hits that were featured in the series of films. Shortly after the tour, Annette came out to her fans with the news that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The disease gradually took away everything from the actress until she finally succumbed to it in 2013 after a decades-long battle.
