Now in its eighth season, The Curse of Oak Island is well on its way to becoming a firm fan favorite. With each enigma the Lagina brothers attempt to uncover, whether it be by excavation or research, Oak Island seems a more curious place than before. But are the mysteries and historical finds depicted in this suspenseful TV show real? Some sources, including real historians, say no.

First of all, the Lagina brothers are not archeologists or historians, though they consult with professionals like local researcher Laird Niven. They cough up the dough for the show themselves, not to mention they also own a lot of Oak Island. The infamous “money pit” might not even be real. Worst of all, some suspect the 2014 death of former show producer Matt Chisholm was no accident. Instead, it was an attempt to make sure his knowledge of a map of the island’s treasures stayed secret.

History Channel is certainly onto a winner with The Curse of Oak Island, so it’s not surprising they’re happy to keep the series cloaked in intrigue. In this video, we demystify some of the wild claims made about the show and let you in on a few secrets the producers were keen to keep under wraps.
