Carole was the youngest of five children, and the man who she believed to be her birth father walked out on her family shortly after she was born. She would go on to drop out of high school and become a hula dancer at the age of 15. This allowed her to save up enough money to move out to Hollywood, where she made her big-screen debut as an extra in the 1937 classic A Star Is Born. Her big break came in 1940, thanks to her being cast in the film One Million B.C.
Over the course of the 1940s, Carole rose to mainstream prominence as both an actress and a pin-up model, with the latter aspect of her career making her incredibly popular amongst soldiers in World War II.
