The most serious were the allegations against Carter Oosterhouse, host of Carter Can. It came out after he left the show that he’d been sexually coercing a former coworker. The hosts of Fixer Upper got in trouble by association. They were tied to an anti-LGBTQ pastor. Even the cleanest of its hosts aren’t immune to getting in trouble. The Property Brothers are one of the network’s most beloved pairs. Footage came out of Jonathan getting into a bar brawl and being forced out.
HGTV stars and shows have had to deal with many lawsuits. Guests sued Windy City Rehab and Love It or List It due to shoddy work. Fixer Upper was sued more than once, including for using land they don’t own. They were even fined by the FDA. One of the network’s few competition shows faced cheating allegations. The winner of the first season of Ellen’s Design Challenge had to have his win revoked after it was discovered he had plagiarized his design.
A suggestion on HGTV’s website to use an American flag as a tablecloth shot the internet ablaze. It was so fiery that they had to take the article down and apologize for it. The reality network isn’t as truthful as it seems across its shows. Most are heavily staged, with the guests having a prepared home to choose from ahead of time. Even the $1 million dream home they give away every year is more of a burden. The taxes are so high that most winners are forced to sell them.
