Sadly, Ingrid’s popularity in America turned against her when she found herself involved in an extramarital affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini. Ingrid had been born and married in Sweden before eventually coming to Hollywood, and she was still married with a child when she struck up her affair with Roberto. Ingrid had apparently become obsessed with Roberto’s work, writing to him in 1949 to ask if she could be cast in one of his films. Given that Roberto was known for sleeping with his actresses despite his marriage, the public shouldn’t have been surprised by the revelation of the affair.
Despite the fact that extramarital affairs were incredibly common in Hollywood at the time, American audiences were shocked that someone like Ingrid Bergman could be involved in one. Ingrid had become a beloved celebrity due to her angelic looks and seemingly innocent nature, and the revelation of her romantic deviancy tarnished this image.
After the revelation of her affair with Roberto, Ingrid was no longer welcome in Hollywood. The two married and moved to Roberto’s home country of Italy, where they had three children. One of these children is model and actress Isabella Rossellini, who has shared many personal details about her parents’ relationship.
