What’s your favorite spooky sitcom: The Addams Family or The Munsters? They may seem similar but are different enough that you may feel compelled to choose a side.
Charles Addams created a series of comics and eventually developed his characters into a macabre family. A team of scriptwriters envisioned The Munsters as a show that satirized classic Universal monster movies after the genre fell out of style. The sitcoms these characters spawned aired at the same time and lasted for two seasons. They became staples of classic TV during their run until they were pushed out by more popular shows.

The Addams Family has a classic theme song that can be recognized in a snap. The Munsters’ theme is also iconic, but it’s not as familiar to those who aren’t already a fan. The Addams also have immediately identifiable characters. The Munsters may be based on classic monsters such as Frankenstein and Dracula, but who doesn’t recognize Wednesday with her black braids and dress or Gomez with his striped suit?
The lifestyles of both families are similar, and both have large, macabre mansions. What sets them apart is that the Munsters want to fit in while the Addams Family couldn’t care less. The storylines of both shows are also unique. The Munsters is a monster version of The Donna Reed Show. The Addams Family is a satirical take on daily life that doesn’t shy away from innuendo and dark topics. The Munsters and The Addams Family both have a lasting legacy that continues to spawn new projects. A Netflix show called Wednesday is in the works, and so is a Munsters film by superfans Rob Zombie.
