Ted Cassidy was born with a condition known as acromegaly, which made him grow to be incredibly tall. It also gave him an incredibly deep voice, which resulted in him getting radio work as an adult. This radio work led to film and television work, where Ted’s height was just as much of an advantage as his voice. Ted’s height resulted in him getting the iconic role of butler Lurch on The Addams Family in 1964. Sadly, the show wasn’t initially as successful as its enduring legacy might suggest, and it was canceled after only two seasons. After its 1966 cancellation, Ted would only be around for another decade before his tragic death.

After The Addams Family came to an end, Ted continued getting consistent work on both the big and the small screen, and in both a seen and unseen capacity. Ted continued utilizing his radio voice during his time in Hollywood, with the actor working as a voiceover artist just as much as he appeared on the screen. In fact, Ted got to reprise the role of Lurch in a voiceover capacity for the 1973 animated series based upon The Addams Family.

Sadly, the condition that gave Ted Cassidy his gigantic height and booming voice also resulted in his death. Join Facts Verse as we explore how Ted Cassidy's cause of death is what made him the perfect Lurch.
