Steve McQueen was born on March 24, 1930, in Beech Grove, Indiana. He had a tumultuous childhood as his father abandoned his mother while she was still pregnant. His mother eventually became an alcoholic and couldn't take care of him. This caused him to struggle in school and even get involved in petty crime.
His life changed when he was left to be raised by his loving grandparents. He eventually joined the military and this instilled a discipline and a love for life that he never had before. Upon his discharge from the military, he decided to pursue a career as an actor.
He studied acting at the Sanford Meisner Neighborhood Playhouse and later at Stella Adler's acting school. He began his acting career appearing in small roles in plays and on popular TV shows.
But his big break came when he landed the lead role in the science-fiction-horror film The Blob. This led to several offers such as The Magnificent Seven and Wanted: Dead or Alive. By the time the 1960s rolled around he was rapidly becoming one of the most popular leading men of his generation. By the end of the 1960s, he was a living legend. Sadly, this wouldn’t last as long as we would have wished.
