She was born with impaired hearing, completely deaf in the right ear, with 20% damage to the left ear. It is believed to have been caused by her mother's case of chicken pox during pregnancy. By 12 years old, a disappointment had inspired her to be of help to others with her plight. She embarked on a trip to France to help auditory-impaired ballet dancers. Despite her good motive, she realized she wasn't skilled enough to fulfill her mission. With disappointment, she returned to England. However, on her way, she visited a friend in a theatre, which is when her life took a shocking turn. She was hired out rightly after bewildering the judges with her lines.

She worked with the company for nine months, after which she enrolled in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, where she would spend the next two years studying acting techniques. She found fame in her stage acting career, which helped her transition to feature films and television series. She married John McEnery in 1973 and had two daughters with him, Phoebe and Chloe. Their marriage ended in 1979. Beacham later got engaged to Bernie Greenwood in 2018, and after she retired, she focused on herself and her works with the deaf community. She continues to advocate for people like her because she believes it's hard to respect them when society can't recognize their worth. She also believes that her disadvantage made her the resilient woman she is and encourages everyone to utilize their handicap to their advantage.
