This chance encounter was the start of a lifelong friendship that later turned into an extramarital affair. Mary and John remained lifelong friends following their meeting as teenagers, and it remains uncertain when the pair became romantically involved as adults. Mary was married to a high-ranking CIA official during the early years of John's marriage to Jackie. During this period, the four of them were all neighbors and friends.

By the time John F. Kennedy was assassinated, he and Mary Pinchot Meyer were officially involved in an extramarital affair. A year after John’s death, Mary Pinchot Meyer was murdered, and her murder remains unsolved to this day.
