Skip Spence was born in Canada and had a musician father who encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Skip Spence was given his first guitar at the age of 10 and never looked back after that.

He moved to the United States with his family in his teens and became involved with the Easy Surf genre performing with a band he formed with his friends. With this band, he began honing his craft on the guitar and also picked up on the drums.

By the time he reached his twenties, he got the opportunity of a lifetime to play drums for Jefferson Airplane. He was involved with the recording of one of their albums. Unfortunately, he didn’t last long with the band and was kicked off after the release of this album.

But this didn’t discourage Skip Spence. He wanted to form his own band and introduce the world to his unique style. He helped co-found Moby Grape and served as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter for the band. Through the band, he tried a variety of musical styles and soon became a notable figure in the psychedelic rock genre.

The 1960s was arguably the best and most productive decade of his life. In addition to his work with Moby Grape, he also released a solo album – Oar, which is highly regarded to this day among fans of psychedelic rock.

But he also had his troubles with mental illness. Soon enough, he became addicted to drugs and alcohol. As the 1970s approached, these horrors would take their toll on Skip’s life.

Let’s look back at the life and career of Skip Spence, and how he spent his darkest years in a psychiatric ward…
