She began dancing as a child but wasn’t ready to dedicate her life to the craft. fortunately for her, a producer saw her on stage and signed her to a 5-year contract.
Her early work received plenty of praise. One of the most notable was The Apartment. It won 10 Academy Awards, but Elizabeth Taylor got the one she was up for instead.
Shirley is a strong-willed woman who punched a journalist for writing about her contract disputes with the producer who discovered her. The incident eventually led to a lawsuit which she won.
Shirley’s later career was full of successes. She continues to act today but has made major changes to her life in her final years.
She spent a year in New Mexico and realized that she’d never felt as peaceful as when she was completely alone. Now that she’s left her husband and her daughter is an adult, she lives alone in California. She spends her time being an activist and thinking about what it means to be alive.
Shirley believes in reincarnation and has even talked about what she believes her past lives may have been like. She also believes that there are more than 2 genders and everyone should be able to express their identity however they choose.
Shirley’s legacy will live on after she’s gone, regardless of whether or not reincarnation is real. Her list of accolades includes a Lifetime Achievement Award and a star on the Walk of Fame.
