There are usually 2 reasons this happens. In the early days of the industry, even mentioning birth and pregnancy was considered taboo. Today, baby bumps may still be hidden if they don’t fit with the character or story.

There are also several strategies used to hide a pregnancy. One of the most common is careful costuming. This is easy for certain roles such as Veronica Lake’s performance as a hobo in Sullivan’s Travels. Baggy clothing fit the role and hid her growing belly.

Certain roles make the costume solution more difficult to achieve. Jeannie in I Dream of Jeannie is known for her outfits, and Barbara Eden felt like she was wearing a tent when they added extra veils to hide her pregnancy.

Another way to keep viewers from noticing a growing belly is staging. Place actresses like Phylicia Rashad behind every object in the Cosby House or keep Shelley Long behind the bar while she’s pregnant on the set of Cheers and hope no one notices.

Careful filming and posing is another method. It was the strategy chosen for Sydney Penney of All My Children and Linda Harrison of Planet of the Apes.

If hiding a bump fails as spectacularly as it did for Laurie Metcalfe on Rosanne, the pregnancy may need to be written into the story This can go well, but it can also become controversial. Not every viewer appreciated how Jane Leeves’s pregnancy was explained by sticking her into a fat suit and having her character struggle with food addiction.

Hiding a pregnancy is so common that deliberately choosing not to do so is a useful way to subvert audience expectations. This was achieved during the Brady reunion special when no one comments on Maureen McCormick playing a pregnant Marcia Brady.
