Did you know that Pat Benatar could’ve been an opera singer and that Blondie’s Debbie Harry got her start singing backup for a folk band? Pat Benatar, Debbie Harry, and Joan Jett are three legendary female rockers that all got their start in the 1970s. All three singers are still around today, though they don’t look quite the same as they used to! This is especially true of Debbie Harry, who has aged pretty terribly given the hard-rocking life that she has lived.

Pat Benatar’s mom was an opera singer, though she put her career by the wayside so that she could take care of her daughter. Lo and behold, Pat went on to sing professionally herself. Pat had the range to sing opera like her mother, but she decided to become a rock star instead. She released her debut album in 1979, though she didn’t find her big success until the 1980s came around.

Debbie Harry was already a big deal thanks to her band Blondie by the time Pat Benatar first showed up on the scene. However, it had taken Debbie many years to get where she was. Debbie had been hanging around the periphery of the entertainment industry in New York since the 1960s, with her first professional gig as a singer coming in 1968. That year, she recorded backup vocals on the first and only album from a folk group by the name of the Wind in the Willows. In 1974, she started up Blondie with her boyfriend Chris Stein, and the rest is history!

We’ll also be looking at Joan Jett in this video. Joan got her start with the band the Runaways when she was only a teenager, though she would go on to find even more success as a solo artist when she started up her own band. Join Facts Verse as we explore how time has not been kind to these female music icons from the 1970s.
