What’s your favorite core group of characters from a sitcom? These central characters can come from anywhere. One of the best that isn’t related by blood are the castaways from Gilligan’s Island.
They were like a group of workers forced to do a job together. Watching the drastically different personalities working towards a single goal of getting off an island was entertaining.

That didn’t mean the cast all got along behind the scenes. Rumors of feuds with star Bob Denver were only one reason that Tina Louise, who played movie star Ginger Grant, had to leave after the show ended. She’d been getting attention for her outstanding performances but not the kind she dreamed of. She wanted to be seen as a serious actress, but the world focused on her physical beauty. The only roles she could seem to land mirrored her ditzy Gilligan character.
She’d had enough after her marriage fell apart and her career seemed to go along with it. The show had plenty of TV movies and spinoffs, but she refused to come back for them. There were three TV movies. They all showed the characters go back and back from the island, eventually turning it into a resort. One even showed them getting help from the Harlem Globetrotters. Then there were the two animated series. They’re not well-known and could be even sillier than the original show. The second one even took Gilligan and his crew to space.
No single actress played Ginger in all of them, and they struggled to find replacements. Who could they find to match Tina’s original greatness? Who could add a new flair? Who wouldn’t leave them?
