One show that went under the radar but still had a fanbase was The Ghost & Mrs. Muir. It was another adaptation of Josephine Leslie’s oft-adapted famous novel. The timeless story involved a widow winning over an angry ghost haunting her new house. Hope Lange played that widow and earned Emmys for lead actress in a comedy series. She wasn’t confident in the show at first but soon realized it was a gem.
Edward Mulhare played the ghost. He originally studied medicine but then became a prolific stage actor before moving to the screen. He was one of Hollywood’s only actors to never be romantically linked to anyone. Charles Nelson Riley overcame early trauma to find a love for acting. He was the home’s greedy landlord CLaymore Gregg. He was almost as well-known for his acting as he was for his game show appearances. Reta Shaw was the housekeeper Martha Shaw. She played in several other supernatural shows, such as Mary Poppins and The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.
Harlene Callaher and Kelle Flannaghen played Mrs. Muir’s children. They are the only cast members who are still alive today. They’ve faded into the background and stepped away from Hollywood but seem content with it. Kelle said in an interview that she enjoyed her time on the show as well as her other famous appearance as “Blonde Girl” on Star Trek. She stays busy with other projects such as magazines and enjoys being surrounded by the beauty of the area around Yosemite National Park.
