Anita Ekberg was born in 1931, and she had seven siblings. This made it so that Anita had to struggle to stand out, and this struggle led to her taking part in the Miss Sweden competition in 1951. She won the competition, and she has subsequently whisked away to America to perform in the Miss Universe competition. Anita proved less successful in this larger competition, but journeying to America is how she ended up becoming involved in the entertainment industry. Anita did some work in Hollywood over the course of the 1950s, including making an appearance in the film Hollywood or Bust, which was a comedy starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. She also appeared in the 1956 adaptation of War and Peace.
After working in Hollywood for around a decade to little avail, Anita traveled to Rome and finally found the success that she deserved by way of the Italian film industry. In 1960, Anita became a star thanks to her appearance as the character of Sylvia in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita. The character was partially based on Anita herself, and the film took full advantage of the actress's stunningly good looks by putting her in a fountain-bathing scene where she may as well have been nude in front of the cameras.
La Dolce Vita made Anita a star, but the film also sadly came to represent the peak of her career success. By the turn of the millennium, Anita was still living in Rome, but she was struggling for work. One of the last features that she appeared in was a crude art film by the name of The Red Dwarf. The director of the film had to beg Anita to appear in it, and she played an aging diva that was largely considered to be a caricature of herself. Just a few years after Anita's appearance in the film, the actress retired.
After her 2002 retirement, Anita lived the remainder of the years as a destitute shell of her former self. In 2011, she suffered an injury that saw her forced to spend three months in the hospital. During this hospital stay, her Italian villa was robbed and lit on fire. Despite all of the hardship that Anita faced during her later years, she went to her deathbed with only one major regret.
