The 1964 Spaghetti Western A Fistful of Dollars, directed by the legendary Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood in his first lead role, saw German-born actress Marianne Koch play the role of Marisol.
Leone unofficially based A Fistful of Dollars off Akira Kurosawa's 1961 film Yojimbo. In fact, the two films bear so much resemblance that it resulted in a successful lawsuit by the Japanese film production company Toho.
The basic premise of A Fistful of Dollars is fairly simple. The Man With No Name, played by Eastwood, entered the Mexican village of San Miguel in the middle of the violent power struggle among three Rojo brothers and the town's sheriff John Baxter. One day, a band of Mexican soldiers came bearing gold intended to pay for new weapons, but their efforts were thwarted by the Rojo Brothers. Seizing the opportunity, Eastwood's nameless character then inserts himself into the middle of the battle, selling fake information to both sides of the conflict for his benefit.
According to the film's backstory, Marisol was at one point the wife of the character Julio and was the mother of their son Jesus, but she ended up getting held hostage by the infamous gangster Ramon Rojo. Not much is known to the audience about Marisol's early life other than the fact that she was more than likely born in Mexico and ended up meeting and marrying Julio at some point. Some time after giving birth to Jesus, Marisol attracted the unwanted attention of the villainous Ramon who accused Julio of cheating in a card game. He used this accusation to justify kidnapping Marisol.
For an indeterminate length of time, Marisol lived with the Rojo brothers and served as a lover to Ramon, All the while, Julio and Jesus remained close by and often caught glimpses of her while she was accompanied through town.
Koch was born in Munich, Germany on the 19th of August, 1931. While she's best known for her iconic role as Marisol, Koch originally set out to be a doctor.
Koch interrupted her medical studies to enter into acting in 1950. 21 years later, she quit acting to resume her studies to become a doctor. She succeeded in that goal in 1974 and maintained a medical career in her home country of Germany as a specialist until 1997. At the same time, Koch hosted a very successful TV talk show called 3nach9 or Three After Nine which earned the German equivalent of the Emmy, the Grimme-Preis. She went on to host medical advice programs on German radio.
