Chumlee is the fan favorite. His clumsy and clownish demeanor made him endearing, but it also got him into personal and legal trouble. The shop’s founder, fondly remembered as The Old Man, was another standout. He stood out against the funnier characters, but there was a lot going on behind his stoic face.
The cast and their shop have had more legal trouble than you’d expect. They’ve dealt with problems such as pawned goods they didn’t know were stolen, disagreements over handling assets, and poor management for themselves and their network. The choice to bring their business to Hollywood came with the typical struggles, but Rick was right when he said that it would make them more well-known. They’re perhaps the most well-known pawn shop of all time.
It’s so popular that it’s become more of a tourist attraction than anything. You won’t even see them selling much there anymore. That doesn’t mean they’re not profitable. It just means that there’s a lot of wheeling and dealing that goes on behind the scenes in the name of privacy. The fast, ping-pong nature of their deals also makes them seem as if they could be staged. Do they happen as sellers walk in, or are they prepared in advance? Are the sellers given any direction on what to say and do?
