Almost all shows and films go through a lengthy casting process, and The Mary Tyler Moore show was no exception. Ed Astner bombed his audition but insisted on getting a second chance. Valerie Harper didn’t seem physically right for the part of Rhoda Morgenstern, but her talent won out. Ted Knight was a struggling actor until he wore a blue blazer and showed his talent as Ted Baxter.
Betty White wasn’t meant to be a permanent fixture on the show. Her performance as Sue Ann Nevins was so hilarious that they had to keep her on.
One face appears in every single episode. Hazel Frederick looks at Mary in the opening credits when she throws her hat. There’s also a character that no one ever sees. His name is Lars, the Mary Tyler Moore show’s answer to the invisible sitcom character trope. The show also spawned others based on its most popular characters. The men in the cast were glad to see Valerie leave to play Rhoda in a spinoff show because it meant more screen time for them. There were also spinoffs for Phyliss and Lou Grant.
The cast got along well, even if it took a few seasons of working together to get close. They chose the right time to end it, but it was an emotional goodbye. The Mary Tyler Moore Show was the first one to ever have a final curtain call where they all give a fond farewell to the audience while not in character.
