Sean had been retired for well over a decade before his death. The actor’s retirement came after the failure of the 2003 blockbuster film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Of course, Sean came into prominence for his portrayal as the character of James Bond, though he ended up saying goodbye to the character for good in the 1980s. After retiring as James Bond, Sean found some success in the 1980s and 1990s before eventually deciding to call it quits due to his lack of success with choosing projects.
In the year 2000, the Queen of England knighted Sean, and he was granted the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. Despite this legacy, many criticized Sean in the years leading up to his death for the supposed abuse that he had perpetrated upon his first wife during their marriage in the 1970s. That first wife was Diane Cilento, who died nearly a decade before Sean in 2011.

Sean married his second wife Micheline Roquebrune in 1975, and the two remained together until Sean’s 2020 death.
