Did you know that multiple main characters died at the end of 1883’s first season and that creator Taylor Sheridan was afraid that this outcome was going to support star Sam Elliott? The first season of the Yellowstone spin-off 1883 aired its finale in February of 2022, and fans were shocked at several deaths that occurred during the episode. One person who wasn’t shocked by the episode’s outcome was supporting star Sam Elliott, who’d been warned by series creator Taylor Sheridan that he might not like how his character’s arc came to an end.

1883’s first season ended with the tragic deaths of two main characters. One of these deaths came of the respective character’s own volition, while the other death was an accident that few audience members saw coming. According to series creator Taylor Sheridan, the first season of 1883 was meant to be a gritty and realistic look at just how hard it was for settlers during the 1800s. If all of the main characters of the series had survived over the course of the first season, this wouldn’t have been realistic.
Taylor Sheridan prepped Sam Elliott a good deal before the legendary performer agreed to take on the role. Sam knew that filming the series was going to be demanding, as much of it was filmed on location across the Oregon Trail. Taylor was also worried that Sam wasn’t going to like how his character’s arc came to an end during the first season’s last episode. Taylor was fully prepared for Sam to hate him, but Sam actually ended up developing quite a bit of respect for the series creator.
