Sally Field had a troubled childhood. Her mother was an aspiring actress that didn’t make the cut, and her stepfather molested her. Sally escaped into the productions put on by her high-school drama department. When it came time for the future star to graduate, she had no ambitions outside of her enjoyment of acting. She ended up attending an open audition being put on by Columbia Pictures. The open audition led to the actress receiving the role of Gidget.
The television series Gidget was based on a book about a real-life teenage surfer. The book also resulted in a film series of the same name.
