Actress Rosalind Russell brought the character to life. She lived a charmed childhood but always dreamed of making the world laugh as a comedic actress. She didn’t get to truly show off what she could do until she joined the cast of The Women. Her career only rose from there. Most actresses were too intimated to go alongside Cary Grant in His Girl Friday, a gender-swapped version of the play The Front Page. Rosalind knew she wasn’t the first choice but was ready to take the challenge on.
She changed the movie forever by making sure both leads had an equal share of its best lines. She also got an opportunity to show off her ad-libbing skills. It was one of the most fast-paced films of all time, but she proved she could keep up. Cary became her lifelong friend, and he even helped her find true love. Frederick Brisson begged him to introduce him to the beautiful young actress, and he eventually did. Rosalind played hard to get but married him the next year, and Cary was the best man at their wedding.
She charmed almost everyone she came in contact with. Her notable friends included Coco Chanel, Frank Sinatra, and even Dwight D. Esisenhower. Health issues such as arthritis and breast cancer forced her to slow down in her later years, but she never truly stopped. She spent the last few years of her life on charity work, running a production studio with her husband, and taking roles she believed in.
