Many may be surprised to learn that Rory Calhoun was an ex-con before stumbling into the entertainment industry. Rory’s predilection for crime began in his teenage years. At the age of 13, he was caught having stolen a firearm. This landed him in a California reformatory, where he allegedly escaped. At the age of 17, Rory ran away from home as a result of the beatings that he was receiving from his stepfather.
After running away from home at the age of 17, Rory robbed several jewelry stores and hotwired a car. He drove this car across state lines, where he was caught. Charged with a series of federal crimes, the 17-year-old was forced to do 3 years in federal prison. Rory was released from prison just before his 21st birthday, and he pledged not to return.
With the exception of a minor stint in the 1940s, Rory Calhoun made good on his pledge not to return to prison. Instead, he found a place for himself in the upper echelon of Hollywood stars! Join Facts Verse as we explore how Rory Calhoun turned his life around from a convicted criminal.
