Rod Serling was dedicated to his craft from the beginning. He had a simple childhood that gave him time to hone his craft, and he would always view it with rose-tinted glasses. Despite his love for storytelling, he went into the army after graduation. That was where he saw the horrors of war firsthand. He also developed injuries that would follow him for the rest of his life. He finally got to try his hand at the radio when he got out and went to college. He developed a love for the medium and a beautiful woman named Carolyn.
He had to pass the right of passage of rejection after rejection once he graduated. The family moved around until they finally found a home for his ideas. The Twilight Zone was a sci-fi series of short moral stories. They spoke about issues close to Rod’s heart in a fantastical but relatable way. He did everything possible to maintain complete creative control over it, and that’s part of why it’s still a fan favorite today.
The rest of his career wasn’t as notable, and the stress lead him to smoke heavily. He eventually died of a heart attack at only 50 years old in 1975. Carolyn lead a long life and died in 2020. She gave a thorough interview about what it was like to live with a dedicated writer. She also spent much of her life working to maintain his legacy.
