Roberta Cleopatra Flack was born on February 10, 1937, in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Her mother was a church organist, and this is where she got her interest in becoming a singer and performer. From a young age, she began singing songs and she fell in love with music so early on that she knew she had to pursue a career as an entertainer.

Like many soul singers, Roberta Flack had her beginnings were in the church. Roberta Flack began singing in the church choir during her childhood and she also began playing the piano during her childhood. But as Roberta Flack was getting older, genres such as doo-wop and R & B and rock and roll were becoming more popular and she had to make her mark in these genres.
She eventually studied music and became a music teacher. While she spent much of her early career helping others hone their craft with music it was clear that she was destined for something much greater.
Along with her teaching, Roberta Flack began singing songs in restaurants and nightclubs and made the switch to singing popular music as opposed to gospel or classical music. In the 1970s, Roberta Flack began getting more attention from some of the key players in the music industry.
In that same decade, she began performing songs and recording albums. She became known for her soft vocals and her melodious singing. One of her most popular songs was “Killing Me Softly” and “The Closer I Get To You” which made her a star. To this day, these are the songs that she is most remembered by.
Sadly, Roberta Flack will never sing again. She’s received a tragic diagnosis and this illness prevents her from singing.
