Walter Brennan played the role of Stumpy, a rough old man who helps Sheriff Chance. Brennan was one of the most accomplished character actors of his time, and he won three Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor. Brennan died in 1974 at the age of 80 due to emphysema.
